On Being a Dance Host

I have always thought that being a Dance Host on a cruise would be a perfect gig for me.

Dance hosts are gentlemen who are available to entertain and accommodate the desire of ladies to dance in the ship’s many music and dance venues. They need to be able to comfortably lead any lady through virtually any dance desired not with the overly-stylized international style (which is actually inappropriate anywhere but international competition) but in a natural, non-intimidating, rhythmic way.

I am called to do that daily here in China and I have served such a function on the many cruises I have attended over the years. I find that language is not a barrier. I have done it around the world. Dancing is a pure means of non-verbal communication.

I am a natural for this and I am constantly on the lookout for opportunities to ply the trade. I use the presentation below as background and would appreciate any referrals if any of you know of an opportunity.

David Sutton is an international consultant specializing in integral health, ecological conservation, sustainable development and creative communications. With over thirty years experience teaching at the University level, working with major Fortune 100 Companies, International Research Institutes, Publishers, Governmental and Non-Governmental Organizations, he is engaged throughout the world for his creativity, problem-solving and writing skills.

Dr. Sutton taught at the University (University of California and Stanford among others) for over 25 years. He has traveled, lived and worked in over 50 countries throughout the Americas, Western Europe, Tropical Asia and East Africa. He was the Safari Ecologist on photo safaris to Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zanzibar; he organized and led expeditions to India, Sikkim, Nepal, Thailand, Singapore, Japan, Costa Rica, and Peru. He has been engaged as a lecturer on a cruise circling South America and has recorded programs on the Queen Elizabeth 2, The “ Dynasty Express”(China), and the “Palace on Wheels” (Rajasthan, India). He founded Antaeus Expeditions, now TAOTravel, to provide first-hand experience of the world’s unique natural environments, wildlife, human cultures, and international efforts to preserve them. As an independent producer, Mr. Sutton has created multi-media public information and education programs for publishing companies and the travel industry. His AudioGeographic is an audio magazine series with supplemental educational materials.

For the past seven years he has been living and working in China (splitting his time between Shanghai and Sanya) where he has conducted trainings, planned events, performed and hosted international celebrities for a number of multinational and local companies, government agencies and entertainment venues.

Traveling extensively as an academic and since he derives much pleasure interacting with people of different cultures. He has a particular knack for engaging people conversationally and non-verbally through dance and magic. He frequently finds himself serving the role of “activator” in events and social situations here in China and has done much the same on a number of cruises over the years.

Recently he accompanied a Costa Allegra cruise leaving Sanya for Viet Nam and Hong where his efforts as international ambassador, dance host and entertaining magician where greatly appreciated. He would be a welcomed addition to any cruise team.
