ECO NOMY Magazine

A New Magazine on Sustainable Business

I met the young soon-to-be editors of this beautifully produced magazine through my friend, Cyrille Jegu who was trying to pave the way for The Natural Step here in China. As some of you might know I was part of the group with Paul Hawkens, Don Aitken that first brought The Natural Step to the United States in the 1990’s and I was doing what I could to help Cyrille. That outcome will be left for a later post.

Sun Haiyan and Sun Yang had just finished their book on “Green Business” and were starting a magazine, I was told and they would like some help with the English side of it (it was to be in both Chinese and English). I agreed to serve on the Advisory Board and to write a regular column in their quarterly magazine. The ninth issue (Spring 2013) is being completed as I post this. All the past issues are archived on their website ([bad link] www.tanshangmedia.com) in Chinese.

Below I have attached the English part of the inaugural issue (Spring 2011) as well as all my submissions, as I submitted them over the past two years. It is my habit to try and present general principles of Sustainabilty in the broadest context possible so as to represent their value in the largest number of applications. Then in most of my articles I use the most eloquent specific examples I can find of sustainable development to illustrate those principles. Unfortunately I am afraid that as many of the articles ultimately appeared some of the general lessons may have been lost. I am finding more and more this inclination in China to focus directly on one specific example after another while neglecting the general lessons that can be learned and applied to many different situations elsewhere.
